A FEAST FOR THE EYE: FRENCH MARKETS AND FOOD SHOPS
The Women’s Institute, 2202 Avalon Place, Houston
Sun, Mar 14, 4 PM, $25
By Lynda & Frank KellyFrance has an amazing diversity of landscapes, architecture, and culinary traditions. Charles de Gaulle once quipped: “How can anyone be expected to govern a country with 325 cheeses?” The number would be closer to 500 if you count local cheeses rarely found outside their region of production.
In spite of the growing number of American-style supermarkets, the French cling to the tradition of street markets and municipal covered markets where they can find food fresh from the farm. Markets are about conviviality too. Shoppers enjoy contact with their favorite purveyors and conversations with friends and neighbors. This gastronomic tour de France will feature markets from various corners of France, special food shops, and a spectacular food fair.
